Sudarsan Pattnaik created sand sculpture on Nabakalebar at Puri beach of Odisha

A year which has two months (Adhika masa) of Ashadha as per the Hindu Calender is auspicious for conducting the ceremony. This usually occurs every twelve to nineteen years. The Idols are made from a special type of Neem wood known as Daru Bramha.   Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has created a sand sculpture on Nabakalebar at Puri beach of Odisha on Wednesday. He has sculpted 6ft high of a Neem Tree with Lord Jagannath and used about 5 tons of sand and also some colour sand to create this sculpture.   No ordinary Neem tree can be used to make the deities . Certain well defined criteria must be satisfied by the tree before it is labelled a Daru Brahma fit for deities making. Sankha (conch), Chakra (disc), Gada (mace/club), Padma (lotus) are the required marks on the tree to be designated Daru Brahma. Now days the daitapatis are searching of the Neem trees which will have all these criteria.   Before I had also created some sand sculpture on Nabakalebar at puri beach and at New York travel fair. During this period of Nabakalebar, I will create different sand sculptures on different occasion.   So far Padma awarded sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has participated in more than 50 international sand sculpture championships and festivals around the World and won many prizes for our country.
